Name?

Scott Phillips

What are you doing besides writing?

Reading, watching movies, trying to make movies.

Film released in the year of your birth?

Yojimbo, baby, Yojimbo! Apart from that '61 wasn't a great year.

What books can we find in your bookshelf?

Hundreds of novels and collections of short stories, including a great deal of crime fiction, most of it in the hardboiled or "noir" category. 150 or so by Simenon, both the Maigrets and the romans durs. Lots of true crime also; collections of crime and accident scene photos and mug shots, as well as books of medical photographs. Cartoons and graphic arts; photography, in particular Martin Parr, Stephen Shore, Gregory Crewdson and other contemporary artists as well as older practitioners like Atget and Lartigue. Books on stereography, paleontology and frauds, particularly art forgery.

Alles in einer Nacht

Some of your favorite film noirs?

Too many to list -- The Killing, Asphalt Jungle, The Prowler, Double Indemnity, Ride the Pink Horse, Chinatown, The Outfit (John Flynn), The Woman Chaser (Robinson Devore), etc. etc. etc.

And films beside noir?

Anything by Kubrick, Herzog, Huston, Wilder, Bunuel, Keaton; The Wild Bunch, les Enfants du Paradis, The Bank Dick, all of Laurel and Hardy, Blade Runner, anything pre-code, especially from Warner Brothers....many many more. I'm pretty well obsessed.
